 NATURE AND ART PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECT

2020 - 2021

In 2020, I have been creating 3 artworks made with fibers extracted from local plants and plants from the farm. Those artworks are made to be seen in dialogue with the environment, through the changing lights of the day. This project is related to healing and be protected by the plants around us, remembering to spend quality time in Nature with our community and to see our natural environment from another point of view. Hopefully, it can helps us to reconnect with our natural environment, learn from it, protect it, be inspired, create and live in harmony with it.

TROPICAL FOREST TALISMAN

Seeds, threads from plants, handmade papers made from local plants, natural dyes from medicinal plants, Weaving with natural fibers, 45 cm x 45 cm, 2020.

This artwork is a sacred tiny part of the tropical forest in the Caribbean. It is made with fibers from local plants, dyed with medicinal plants as a protection. Some of those fibers and handmade papers are made from the bark of the Hibiscus Elatus, el Majagua, providing us clear spring water in our everyday life at the farm and symbolizing water in my work. In this artwork, threads of Hibiscus Elatus’ fibers is streaming between various fibers from banana stem, inside a central weaving, communicating with seeds in the center of this circle of life.

Materiality: Hand Papermaking in the Age of Isolation

"As an exhibition, Materiality: Hand Papermaking in the Age of Isolation is comprised of artists utilizing hand papermaking techniques or working with handmade paper.  As a community of artists and craftspeople working with handmade paper and techniques, we create a wide array of tactile material. Those materials speak to the core of our senses and tie us to a vast tradition rooted in the transformation of natural fibers. Artists investigate the concepts of transition and change that are so inherent in the creation of paper and paper arts. The esteemed jurors for the first NAHP Juried Exhibition are Fabiola Jean-Louis, Hong Hong, and Anne McKeown"

SPENDING QUALITY TIME WITH MY LOVED ONES

Handmade papers from plants, cotton paper, fibers from banana stem and leaves, handmade watercolors from puerto rican earth pigments, 61cm x 46 cm, 2020.

Now more than ever, I realize the vital importance of spending quality time with my family and friends. In those moments, I am inspired by the energy that moves within each of us, that goes through everybody and grows. In this work, I want to remind us that meditating, talking, playing music, singing or dancing together are powerful healing activities, which fill us with a deep sense of happiness.

FOREST SPIRIT

Handmade papers from local plants and weaving made with raw fibers extracted from banana stem and Hibiscus Elatus (Majagua), 2020.

When I walk in the forest, I like to think that the observation of some details I have never noticed before can guides me in my life. It reminds me of looking at my life experiences through different point of view. For this reason, this work have to be observed in dialogue with its environment, through the changing lights of the day. While changing its appearance, the atmosphere reveals it transforming, moving, dancing, playing, living.
